{"id":1164,"date":"2007-01-26T14:37:00","date_gmt":"2007-01-26T20:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/01\/catholic-leaders-want-limits-on-stem-cell-research\/"},"modified":"2007-01-26T14:37:00","modified_gmt":"2007-01-26T20:37:00","slug":"catholic-leaders-want-limits-on-stem-cell-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/01\/catholic-leaders-want-limits-on-stem-cell-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Catholic leaders want limits on stem cell research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rbpm1LBDo8I\/AAAAAAAAAlU\/Qm5TdSajlZY\/s1600-h\/Legislature.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rbpm1LBDo8I\/AAAAAAAAAlU\/Qm5TdSajlZY\/s200\/Legislature.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5024441397961532354\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>The state\u2019s Catholic bishops want to limit state spending on stem cell research to experimenting only with cells that don\u2019t involve the destruction of embryos, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/news\/xgr\/532996xgr01-26-07.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Albuquerque Journal<\/a> is reporting.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Archbishop Michael Sheehan of <st1:city st=\"on\">Santa Fe<\/st1:city> and Bishops Ricardo Ramirez of the Diocese of Las Cruces and Donald Pelotte of the Diocese of Gallup met with <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> on Thursday to share their concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe very much favor research that helps find cures for diseases, as long as it doesn\u2019t involve the destruction of human life,\u201d the Journal quoted Sheehan as saying.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The governor announced in October that he wants to allocate $10 million over the next three years to fund a stem cell research center at the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype> of  <st1:placename st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>. The first phase of that plan &#8211; $3.8 million to fund construction of a building and $2.2 million in other funds \u2013 is proposed by <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> in this year\u2019s budget.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Catholic leaders want <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> to pledge that research will only be done on stem cells derived from amniotic fluid, babies\u2019 umbilical cords and adult stem cells. <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> has only said publicly that he will consider the request. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The state\u2019s Catholic bishops want to limit state spending on stem cell research to experimenting only with cells that don\u2019t involve the destruction of embryos, the Albuquerque Journal is reporting.
