But he played down the likelihood that he\u2019s leaving.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cRumors are rumors. I\u2019m still the president of NMSU,\u201d the newspaper quoted Martin as saying. \u201cI\u2019ve had a casual conversation with a couple of (Purdue) trustees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Purdue\u2019s current president is retiring at the end of June. The school has been in the process of searching for a new leader since September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Sources say Martin is a top contender for the job. They also say that, unlike past opportunities that Martin turned aside, he might be very interested in making this move to <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Indiana<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Martin told the Sun-News he had not traveled to Purdue for an interview.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Laura Conniff, an NMSU regent, said it\u2019s \u201cnot so much Mike looking at Purdue. Purdue is looking at Mike. We do not want to lose him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Regent Bob Gallagher told the newspaper that Purdue \u201cis not the only (university) that has contacted him in the past three months. It\u2019s obviously a compliment to Mike\u2019s ability\u2026 If he leaves, it will leave a big void. He has elevated our university to a national level that I believe has given us stature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Martin has been president since 2004 and currently makes a base annual salary of just under $300,000.
