{"id":1144,"date":"2007-01-23T14:18:00","date_gmt":"2007-01-23T20:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/01\/cockfighting-ban-might-be-placed-on-fast-track\/"},"modified":"2007-01-23T14:18:00","modified_gmt":"2007-01-23T20:18:00","slug":"cockfighting-ban-might-be-placed-on-fast-track","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/01\/cockfighting-ban-might-be-placed-on-fast-track\/","title":{"rendered":"Cockfighting ban might be placed on fast track"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RbZt5LBDojI\/AAAAAAAAAgo\/N45pgvWBpBY\/s1600-h\/Garcia,+Mary+Jane.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RbZt5LBDojI\/AAAAAAAAAgo\/N45pgvWBpBY\/s200\/Garcia,+Mary+Jane.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5023323263355560498\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>A bill that would outlaw cockfighting in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> will likely get its first hearing this week or next week, and might be placed on a fast track so the Senate can get on with other business.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=261&#038;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Mary Jane Garcia<\/a>, D-Do\u00f1a Ana and sponsor of <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/Sessions\/07%20Regular\/bills\/senate\/SB0010.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Bill 10<\/a>, held a news conference this morning with the New Mexico Conference of Catholic Bishops, which announced its support for the state ban on cockfighting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The bill has been assigned to the Senate Conservation Committee, which is chaired by Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=263&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Phil Griego<\/a>, D-San Jose and an opponent of the cockfighting ban. Garcia said Griego has pledged to hold a hearing on the bill later this week or next week and to give it a fair hearing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RbZt_7BDokI\/AAAAAAAAAgw\/PARJ0VQuhAg\/s1600-h\/Legislature.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RbZt_7BDokI\/AAAAAAAAAgw\/PARJ0VQuhAg\/s200\/Legislature.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5023323379319677506\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Griego is under a lot of pressure, as Gov. Bill Richardson and many Senate leaders are supporting Garcia\u2019s bill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But Garcia said the bill might bypass Griego\u2019s committee altogether. Some Senate leaders are suggesting that the bill be considered in a committee-of-the-whole session, which would allow it to bypass the committee process. If that becomes a reality, such a session might be held early next week, Garcia said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe need to do this quickly and get it out of the way. We have so many other issues,\u201d Garcia said. \u201cEverybody seems to want to expedite it, as do I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Most believe that, because of the governor\u2019s support, the cockfighting ban will be approved this year. That won\u2019t come before spirited debate in front of a large audience. For years, Garcia\u2019s proposed cockfighting ban has been a hot topic that draws hundreds to <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Santa Fe<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">If the proposal passes the Senate, it will go the House for consideration. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A bill that would outlaw cockfighting in New Mexico will likely get its first hearing this week or next week, and might be placed on a fast track so the Senate can get on with other business.
