Bill Richardson called for lawmakers to approve in last week\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2007\/01\/text-of-richardsons-state-of-state.html\" target=\"_blank\">State of the State address<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cOne group is making enormous sacrifices on behalf of our state, our country, and our freedom \u2013 brave New Mexicans serving in the <st1:country-region st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:country-region> military,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said in his speech. \u201cWe have done more than most states to show our gratitude. Let\u2019s go a step further. Let\u2019s eliminate the state\u2019s income tax for active duty members of the military, period.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RbZSibBDohI\/AAAAAAAAAgQ\/wOD9zFSNQH0\/s1600-h\/Cote,+Nate.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RbZSibBDohI\/AAAAAAAAAgQ\/wOD9zFSNQH0\/s200\/Cote,+Nate.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5023293185699586578\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><st1:place st=\"on\">Cote<\/st1:place>, a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a retired civilian employee of the Air Force, said the proposal is an important incentive for the nation\u2019s volunteer military.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI am honored to carry this bill, which is endorsed by Governor Richardson,\u201d <st1:place st=\"on\">Cote<\/st1:place> said in a news release. \u201cI anticipate strong support form both Democrats and Republicans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Cote<\/st1:place> has also introduced <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/Sessions\/07%20Regular\/bills\/house\/HB0209.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">House Bill 209<\/a>, which would make more children of military families eligible to receive the lottery scholarship. Currently, students who graduate from <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> high schools while their families are stationed in the state aren\u2019t eligible for the lottery scholarship if their families maintain a legal and permanent address in another state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Cote<\/st1:place> wants to change that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe lottery scholarship bill provides important support to graduating seniors and offers the opportunity for these young adults to remain close to their families while attending <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state>\u2019s fine colleges and universities,\u201d <st1:place st=\"on\">Cote<\/st1:place> said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">There\u2019s also <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/Sessions\/07%20Regular\/bills\/house\/HB0210.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">House Bill 210<\/a>, which would provide current and retired members of the armed forces and their families free access to state parks, museums, recreation areas and campgrounds. And there\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/Sessions\/07%20Regular\/bills\/house\/HB0211.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">House Bill 211<\/a>, which would provide $500,000 in fiscal year 2008 to establish a pilot project for veterans who need treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>State Rep.
