Gov. Diane Denish <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2007\/01\/denish-plans-to-run-for-governor-in.html\" target=\"_blank\">has already announced<\/a> her intention to run in 2010, and made clear that she\u2019s ready to step in before that if Gov. Bill Richardson takes a job in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Now comes the news, reported in today\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/news\/metro\/532096metro01-23-07.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Albuquerque Journal<\/a>, that Albuquerque Mayor Martin Ch\u00e1vez has filed paperwork to form the \u201cMarty Ch\u00e1vez for <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>\u201d committee and is having an \u201cexploratory kickoff event\u201d next week that costs $2,000 to attend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Ch\u00e1vez, who like Denish is a Democrat, told the Journal that 2010 is far away and he isn\u2019t certain he\u2019ll run for governor \u2013 he might instead seek re-election to his current job \u2013 but Denish\u2019s early entry in the race has forced him to start raising money so he can keep up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI\u2019m opening doors,\u201d Ch\u00e1vez told the Journal. \u201cI love the job I have. I\u2019m not precluding running for re-election, but clearly the season is starting a little earlier this year, given the lieutenant governor\u2019s declaration and the fact that she\u2019s aggressively raising money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Next week\u2019s Ch\u00e1vez fundraiser will be hosted by former U.S. Ambassador to Spain Ed Romero and his wife, but Romero said that doesn\u2019t mean he is picking sides.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThis means that I\u2019m just accommodating a friend, OK?\u201d the Journal quoted him as saying.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Ch\u00e1vez is in his third term as <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> mayor. He ran unsuccessfully against former Gov. Gary Johnson in 1998, with Denish as his running mate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">By the end of 2006, Denish had already raised $1 million for her 2010 gubernatorial campaign, the Journal reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Former Attorney General Patricia Madrid has said she might run for governor in 2010, further crowding the field of potential Democratic contenders. State Rep. Joseph Cervantes, D-Las Cruces, has also been mentioned as a possible candidate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">On the Republican side, politicos mentioned as possible gubernatorial candidates include U.S. Rep.
