\"\"<\/a>Gov. Bill Richardson will announce Sunday that he is taking the initial step toward seeking the Democratic Party\u2019s 2008 presidential nomination. <\/p>\n

Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> plans to announce that he will soon file paperwork creating an exploratory committee, the first step toward a run for president and the same step taken earlier this week by Illinois Sen. Barack Obama.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

One source told me this afternoon about the planned Sunday announcement. Shortly after that, the Associated Press reported<\/a> that several sources had confirmed it.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is scheduled to appear on This Week with George Stephanopoulos<\/a> on Sunday morning, and will likely make the announcement there. According to the show\u2019s Web site, he plans to discuss whether he\u2019ll run and how he can \u201ccombat the star power of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

This Week with George Stephanopoulos airs at 9 a.m. on Sunday on ABC, which in Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is Channel 7. It\u2019s also Channel 7 in the Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> television market.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Richardson and Stephanopoulos worked together in former President Bill Clinton\u2019s administration. Stephanopoulos was a senior political adviser to Clinton<\/st1:city>\u2019s 1992 U.S.<\/st1:country-region> presidential campaign later became Clinton<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s communications director.<\/p>\n

The description for Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s book, Between Worlds, states that the governor is \u201cthe man George Stephanopoulos once called the Red Adair of diplomacy in homage to his ability to put out international fires.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many have speculated that Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is modeling his presidential run in many ways after that of Clinton, who was also a small-state governor. Like Clinton<\/st1:city>, Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is gifted and personable. Clinton<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> faced allegations of indiscretions during his campaign. Rumors about Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> have persisted for years, but concrete allegations have never been made publicly.<\/p>\n

One recent comment on the Internet on that topic was made by Markos Moulitsas Z\u00faniga, the administrator of the immensely popular liberal blog Daily Kos. He had this to say today in critiquing Richardson<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd his private life is the subject of – how should I delicately put it? – Clintonian rumors,\u201d Z\u00faniga wrote.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

And Wonkette<\/a> referred to Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place>\u2019s \u201cunspecified bimbo-itis.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Those who say such rumors might derail Richardson<\/st1:city>\u2019s White House run should remember that Clinton<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> overcame the allegations to become a two-term president.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

The point is that Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> has a long relationship with Stephanopoulos. In deciding how to announce his presidential run, he might want to create nostalgia for the Clinton<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> days \u2013 if not by talking about them with Stephanopoulos, at least by being in the same room with him while announcing his run for president.<\/p>\n

Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> spokesman Gilbert Gallegos made this statement:<\/p>\n
