{"id":11103,"date":"2010-01-11T11:33:47","date_gmt":"2010-01-11T18:33:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=11103"},"modified":"2010-01-11T11:34:54","modified_gmt":"2010-01-11T18:34:54","slug":"amato-announces-candidacy-for-mayor-of-carlsbad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2010\/01\/amato-announces-candidacy-for-mayor-of-carlsbad\/","title":{"rendered":"Amato wants to be first woman to lead Carlsbad"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_11191\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 120px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11191\" title=\"Amato, Wendy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Amato-Wendy.jpg\" alt=\"Wendy Amato\" width=\"120\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wendy Amato<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/amatoformayor.yolasite.com\">Wendy Amato<\/a>, who declared her candidacy for mayor of Carlsbad last week, says if she wins\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityofcarlsbadnm.com\/city_clerk\/elections.html\">on March 2<\/a> she would become the first woman elected to the position.<\/p>\n<p>A former civilian logistics manager for the Navy in Guam, Amato said she wants to make Carlsbad into a green city, develop ecotourism and attract the alternative energy industry, which she said will will create high-paying jobs for residents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m running for mayor because I believe in the incredible potential of Carlsbad to become a model green city, which would increase jobs and tourism,\u201d Amato said.<\/p>\n<p>The community activist said she believes Carlsbad is the state&#8217;s &#8220;hidden gem.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can increase eco-tourism and capitalize on our sunshine to develop algae for biodeisel and perhaps solar farms. The potential for \u2018green jobs\u2019 here is endless,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Amato, who has a master&#8217;s degree in counseling and educational psychology, moved to Carlsbad two years ago from Guam, where she worked for the Navy&#8217;s Space and Warfare Command.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Amato initiated a city-wide mural program and led a team to decorate the trash bins along the river park with petroglyph designs.<\/p>\n<p>Amato, who was recognized last fall by the Democratic Women for &#8220;Outstanding Service and Leadership,&#8221; has spent time tutoring, teaching dance classes and reading to preschoolers at the library, and said, in a news release, that she facilitates drum circles.<\/p>\n<p>Amato joined a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.currentargus.com\/ci_14145562\">crowded field<\/a> in the race,\u00a0and will face City Councilor <a href=\"http:\/\/diamondformayor.com\/splash\/index.html\">Jeffrey Diamond<\/a>, Dale Janway, Roosevelt Armendariz, Tom Mathis and Garry Adams.<\/p>\n<p>Martin Mills will not appear on the ballot due to a discrepancy in his filing paperwork, but will be able to run as a write-in candidate.<\/p>\n<p>Incumbent Mayor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityofcarlsbadnm.com\/mayor\/index.html\">Bob Forrest<\/a> is not seeking re-election.<\/p>\n<p><em>St. Cyr is a contributing writer for this site and a reporter at 770KKOB.com.
