Bill Richardson, who has worked hard to increase the West\u2019s prominence in the nominating process as he prepares to announce what most expect to be his own presidential run.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Richardson and others pushed to move <st1:state st=\"on\">Nevada<\/st1:state>\u2019s caucuses ahead of the <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Hampshire<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> primary and won. Now they have succeeded in beating out <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">New York City<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> for the 2008 convention, which will be held Aug. 25-28.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s influence in the party will only increase as his proposals become reality. The victory also boosts <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s White House hopes, as it brings further attention to the West and its political leaders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The decision by DNC Chairman Howard Dean had been expected in December, but was delayed when bids from both cities faltered. In <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New York<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the city could not pay the costs. In <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Denver<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> there are a host of logistical and labor issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Denver<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> won out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThere is no question that the West is important to the future of the Democratic Party,\u201d Dean said in a statement. \u201cThe recent Democratic gains in the West exemplify the principle that when we show up and ask for people\u2019s votes and talk about what we stand for, we can win in any part of the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Republican National Convention will be held starting Sept. 1 in Minneapolis-St. Paul, <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Minn.<\/st1:place><\/st1:state><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Hosting a convention is a huge task. <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Denver<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is expected to have an additional 35,000 visitors for the Democrats\u2019 event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 1:10 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> issued this statement:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThis isn\u2019t just a win for <st1:city st=\"on\">Denver<\/st1:city> and <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Colorado<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>, but for the whole mountain west. From <st1:state st=\"on\">Montana<\/st1:state> to <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>, the west is the most fertile ground for Democrats.
