Bill Richardson says his efforts in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">Sudan<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> \u201copened the door for the peace process to take hold and move forward,\u201d according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqtrib.com\/news\/2007\/jan\/11\/governor-touts-his-work-darfur\/\" target=\"_blank\">Albuquerque Tribune<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> made the comments during an early morning news conference upon his return to <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> succeeded in getting both sides in the conflict to agree to a 60-day ceasefire and peace talks, but could not get the Sudanese government to commit to allowing a U.N. peacekeeping force in the war-torn <st1:place st=\"on\">Darfur<\/st1:place> region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cOn the U.N. issue, while we didn\u2019t get everything we wanted, we made inroads,\u201d the newspaper quoted <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> as saying. \u201c\u2026 It is now up to the leaders of the United Nations and the African Union to monitor and ensure implementation by the Sudanese government and rebels, and to use this opening to pursue the durable political solution that will end the tragedy afflicting the people of <st1:place st=\"on\">Darfur<\/st1:place>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said the ceasefire and peace talks were more important than the allowing of peacekeepers in the nation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cYou can\u2019t have peacekeepers if there is no peace to keep,\u201d the newspaper quoted him as saying.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.savedarfur.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Save Darfur Coalition<\/a>, which asked for <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> to intervene and paid for his trip, heaped praise on the governor in a statement posted on its Web site.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThere was positive movement on a number of issues, most notably the agreement to a ceasefire between the government and rebel groups that will immediately save lives,\u201d said retired Ambassador Lawrence Rossin, Save Darfur\u2019s senior international coordinator. \u201cThe agreement also creates an improved environment for a political settlement, based on the Darfur Peace Agreement, to move forward.\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gov.
