Heather Wilson, R-N.M., is showing her moderate side and her more practical side as she jumps into the debate over what to do in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In a speech given Friday to the National Press Club, <st1:city st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:city> said the <st1:country-region st=\"on\">United  States<\/st1:country-region> must give up its attempt to democratize <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place>, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/news\/washington\/526739nm01-06-07.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Albuquerque Journal<\/a>. She has also said she opposes the troop increase most expect President Bush to <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20070108\/ap_on_go_pr_wh\/us_iraq\" target=\"_blank\">announce on Wednesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:city> is a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and recently returned from a fact-finding trip to <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>. She said the situation there is \u201cgrave and not improving,\u201d according to the Journal. She said a troop surge would make a short-term difference, but none in the long-term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe are beyond that now,\u201d the Journal quoted her as saying. \u201c(Iraqis) must own their neighborhoods. We can help them, but we cannot do it for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:city> said the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">United States<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> shouldn\u2019t focus on stopping sectarian violence between ethnic groups, and should focus on stabilizing the region and ridding it of al-Qaida terrorists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cAs cold as it sounds, the sectarian violence is not something we can stop by getting in the middle of it, and it is not in our vital national interest to do so,\u201d the Journal quoted her as saying. \u201cThe American military should only be used to protect <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">America<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place>\u2019s vital interests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> has shared her views with the Bush Administration. According to the Journal, she said in her speech that, as it became clear that there were no weapons of mass destruction in <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>, the Bush Administration shifted its focus to freedom and democracy for the Iraqi people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe all know that the intelligence was wrong, but perhaps because it was wrong there has been a tendency since the occupation to describe our goals in loftier rhetoric, and I think that\u2019s a mistake,\u201d the Journal quoted her as saying. \u201cWe always have to be focused on <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>\u2019s vital interests. We can\u2019t substitute our vital interest because the intelligence fell apart. \u2026 It is not vital to <st1:country-region st=\"on\">America<\/st1:country-region>\u2019s national interest that <st1:country-region st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:country-region> remain a unified country, except to the extent that dissolution of <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> as a strong nation contributes to regional instability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">This is one of the reasons <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> won her hotly contested House race last year: She\u2019s not afraid to break with the Bush Administration, and do so publicly, winning many moderate Democratic friends. She is also immensely practical \u2013 sometimes even coldly practical \u2013 which resonates with the more libertarian voters in her district.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">And unlike the Bush Administration and her fellow Republican House member from <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state>, Steve Pearce, <st1:city st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:city> has been known from time to time to say things that will upset American corporations with interests in the <st1:place st=\"on\">Middle  East<\/st1:place>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 1:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> sent a letter to President Bush today formally laying out her arguments.
