Steve Pearce, R-N.M.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;I ask you to take into consideration the steadfast conviction Mrs. Duran has shown throughout her career as a public servant to the people of New Mexico,&#8221; Pearce wrote. He added that Duran has &#8220;time and again shown a commitment to the betterment of the lives of her fellow New Mexicans.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I ask that you give Mrs. Duran your every consideration in light of the many contributions\u00a0she has made to the State of New Mexico,&#8221; Pearce wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Duran and Pearce, both Republicans, served together in the New Mexico Legislature, he as a House member and she as a senator. Pearce&#8217;s letter was first posted online by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thenewmexican\/status\/674303409734873088\" target=\"_blank\">The Santa Fe New Mexican<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Duran <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2015\/10\/dianna-duran-has-resigned\/\" target=\"_blank\">resigned from office in October<\/a> and pleaded guilty to two felonies related to abusing the state&#8217;s campaign finance reporting system.\u00a0Though Duran\u2019s resignation is final,\u00a0her criminal case\u00a0may not be entirely settled.<\/p>\n<p>Duran, who is trying to avoid prison time,\u00a0has the option to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/steveterrell\/status\/657587705937829889\" target=\"_blank\">withdraw her guilty plea<\/a> at her Dec. 14 sentencing hearing\u00a0if District Judge\u00a0T. Glenn Ellington\u00a0attempts to incarcerate her.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Though the Attorney General&#8217;s Office and Duran&#8217;s attorney have agreed to a deal that includes\u00a0no prison time, Ellington\u00a0will decide whether to approve\u00a0the agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Duran was using campaign funds to keep her personal bank account in the black while gambling at several casinos in New Mexico. Prosecutors accused her of\u00a0depositing some\u00a0checks intended to be campaign contributions into her personal account and never disclosing them as political donations. In other instances the AG\u2019s office accused\u00a0Duran of taking\u00a0money out of\u00a0her campaign account and depositing it into her\u00a0personal account.<\/p>\n<p>In all, Duran was\u00a0accused of misusing\u00a0about\u00a0$10,000 in campaign funds.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/685023\/news\/memo-asks-that-duran-be-spared-prison-time.html\" target=\"_blank\">her own court filing<\/a> asking for no prison time, Duran states that she begged God to &#8220;relieve me from the extraordinary burden and shame of a growing dependence on gaming.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Without explicitly seeking leniency for former Secretary of State Dianna Duran, U.S. Rep.
