To\u00a0some, Albuquerque is an especially concerning place to live.<\/p>\n<p>Those were among the takeaways\u00a0when NMPolitics.net piggybacked off a question The New York Times <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2015\/12\/03\/us\/mass-shootings-fear-voices.html?_r=1\" target=\"_blank\">explored<\/a>\u00a0in the wake of last week&#8217;s\u00a0terrorist attack <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/lanow\/la-me-ln-san-bernardino-shooting-live-updates-htmlstory.html\" target=\"_blank\">in San Bernardino, Calif.<\/a>\u00a0&#8212;\u00a0How often, if ever, do you think about the possibility of a shooting in your daily life? We asked our community\u00a0on Facebook to weigh in.<\/p>\n<p>Some said they are making choices &#8212; including arming themselves &#8212; to feel safer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m beginning the process of acquiring a weapon and qualifying for concealed carry. Don&#8217;t intend to be a victim,&#8221; Mary Thompson of Las Cruces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/nmpolitics\/posts\/923809177654807?comment_id=923887474313644&amp;comment_tracking=%7B%22tn%22%3A%22R9%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Many\u00a0said\u00a0they refuse to let fear overtake them.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Life is too short to waste it worrying about dying,&#8221; Joe Bryant of Albuquerque <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/nmpolitics\/posts\/923809177654807?comment_id=924016414300750&amp;comment_tracking=%7B%22tn%22%3A%22R5%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a sample of the responses we received:<\/p>\n<h3>&#8216;It is constantly on the news&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>Kimberly Fries Walker of Santa Fe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/haussamen\/posts\/10100954696183481?comment_id=10100955075787751&amp;comment_tracking=%7B%22tn%22%3A%22R5%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> she thinks about the possibility of a shooting &#8220;every day.&#8221;<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m a teacher. One daughter is a teacher. The others are nurses. We go to movies,&#8221; she said. &#8220;This is wrong. No one should have to associate gun violence with education, health care or entertainment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While some say they refuse to live in fear, Deb Johnson of Las Cruces\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/nmpolitics\/posts\/923809177654807?comment_id=923825130986545&amp;comment_tracking=%7B%22tn%22%3A%22R9%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>\u00a0she &#8220;can&#8217;t apply my bravado&#8221; and claim she doesn&#8217;t think about shootings.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Of course it crosses my mind every time I have to go into any large crowded public event, or even theaters,&#8221; Johnson\u00a0said. &#8220;&#8230;Even if I don&#8217;t let it determine my actions, it does cross my mind.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sam Sandoval Jr. of Albuquerque\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/nmpolitics\/posts\/923809177654807?comment_id=923864210982637&amp;comment_tracking=%7B%22tn%22%3A%22R9%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\">agreed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is constantly on the news, we are deluged in grief and fear,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8216;Albuquerque is particularly violent&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>Several people\u00a0referred to the recent spate of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kob.com\/article\/stories\/s3983089.shtml#.VmO4QN-rSDU\" target=\"_blank\">horrific crimes involving firearms<\/a> in Albuquerque, including the October shooting death of 4-year-old <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/parents-girl-killed-road-rage-shooting-she-was-just-beautiful-n449481\" target=\"_blank\">Lilly Garcia<\/a> in what police call a road-rage incident.\u00a0Niccie Jo Werley-Crespin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/nmpolitics\/posts\/923809177654807?comment_id=923952014307190&amp;comment_tracking=%7B%22tn%22%3A%22R9%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> she didn&#8217;t\u00a0fear gun violence until recently.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Just moved to Albuquerque and have become really cautious,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Horan of Albuquerque <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/nmpolitics\/posts\/923809177654807?comment_id=923988677636857&amp;comment_tracking=%7B%22tn%22%3A%22R9%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\">agreed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m not so worried about being caught in a newsworthy mass shooting. I think the chances of that are unlikely,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I do worry about being shot by an angry driver or in some other isolated incident, given that we have more guns than people in this country, and Albuquerque is particularly violent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Albuquerque&#8217;s violent crime rate &#8212; 774 crimes per 100,000 residents <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/522279\/news\/report-nm-ranks-2nd-in-nation-for-violent-crime.html\" target=\"_blank\">in 2013<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; was higher than New Mexico&#8217;s rate of 597 per 100,000 residents and\u00a0more than twice the national average of 368 per 100,000. And in 2014, violent crime\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/591022\/news\/violent-crime-jumps-in-duke-city.html\" target=\"_blank\">increased in Albuquerque<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lucinda Ulrich recently moved from the Duke City\u00a0to Oregon in part to escape <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/08\/03\/opinion\/sunday\/goodbye-albuquerque-land-of-violence.html\" target=\"_blank\">the crime<\/a> in New Mexico&#8217;s largest city. While shootings were a daily concern\u00a0in Albuquerque, she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/haussamen\/posts\/10100954696183481?comment_id=10100954699721391&amp;comment_tracking=%7B%22tn%22%3A%22R9%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>\u00a0she now worries maybe once a week.<\/p>\n<p>Still, she&#8217;s not happy with the reality her 11-year-old daughter faces, even in Oregon. Her school does active-shooter drills.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is not the type of world I want to live in or to leave my daughter,&#8221; Ulrich said.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8216;I refuse to live my life in fear&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>Mark Benson of Las Cruces is among those who responded to NMPolitics.net&#8217;s\u00a0question by saying they refuse to be consumed by\u00a0worry.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I refuse to live my life in fear. Being paranoid and fearful is only enabling domestic and foreign terrorists,&#8221; Benson\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/nmpolitics\/posts\/923809177654807?comment_id=923810810987977&amp;comment_tracking=%7B%22tn%22%3A%22R9%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Carol Haussamen of Las Cruces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/nmpolitics\/posts\/923809177654807?comment_id=923819014320490&amp;comment_tracking=%7B%22tn%22%3A%22R9%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\">agreed<\/a>. (Disclosure: She&#8217;s my mom.)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To do so is to let terrorism win,&#8221; Haussamen said. &#8220;Fear robs your life, and the fear-mongering by some in this country is meant to distract and divide. I am reminded of <a href=\"http:\/\/kron4.com\/2015\/11\/15\/eiffel-tower-closed-travel-plans-impacted-by-paris-attacks\/\" target=\"_blank\">a quote <\/a>from someone in Paris in the aftermath of the terrorism there &#8212; &#8216;We&#8217;re never truly safe, but we always have to live.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gerry Lindstrom of Los Alamos\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/nmpolitics\/posts\/923809177654807?comment_id=923863450982713&amp;comment_tracking=%7B%22tn%22%3A%22R9%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> there&#8217;s little reason to fear.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As horrific as these events are, statistically they are so infrequent that they are basically nonexistent,&#8221; Lindstrom\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8216;I live with a gun on me&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>With mass shootings <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/09\/25\/us\/25shooters.html\" target=\"_blank\">on the rise<\/a>, others see things differently. Carol Owensby, who teaches at a public high school in Las Cruces, thinks about the possibility of\u00a0a shooting at her school.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With all the glass windows in my classroom, the best security advice in an active-shooter situation is to run away,&#8221; she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/nmpolitics\/posts\/923809177654807?comment_id=923945284307863&amp;comment_tracking=%7B%22tn%22%3A%22R9%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>. &#8220;I talk to the kids about it at the start of each semester, then we proceed as usual.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All you can do is plan for the worst, but hope for the best,&#8221; Owensby said.<\/p>\n<p>Others are responding by arming themselves. In 2014, 40,794 New Mexicans had licenses to carry concealed handguns, according to the state&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dps.state.nm.us\/index.php\/nm-concealed-carry\/concealed-handgun-carry-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Public Safety<\/a>. That was 2.7 percent of all adults age 20 and older.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I live with a gun on me as I am the only one who can, will, and has the responsibility to protect myself and my family,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/nmpolitics\/posts\/923809177654807?comment_id=923957867639938&amp;comment_tracking=%7B%22tn%22%3A%22R9%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> Daniel Adams of Albuquerque.<\/p>\n<p>Martin Molina of Albuquerque <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/haussamen\/posts\/10100954696183481?comment_id=10100954698369101&amp;comment_tracking=%7B%22tn%22%3A%22R9%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> the gun\u00a0he carries makes him feel safe.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am very confident with my firearm. I probably put in more time at a shooting range than a cop,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Emily H. Melancon of Albuquerque <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/nmpolitics\/posts\/923809177654807?comment_id=924092060959852&amp;comment_tracking=%7B%22tn%22%3A%22R3%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> she&#8217;s more afraid of people who are arming themselves in response to mass shootings than those committing shootings.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t trust the masses to have firearms in public places. I&#8217;m OK\u00a0with them defending their homes if they choose to, but with the hot-head tempers we have around here, I can see it turning into a blood bath of more mass shootings before it would help stop any of this,&#8221; Melancon said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mass shootings and other gun crimes are a reality many New Mexicans think about regularly.
