Bill Richardson will travel back to <st1:country-region st=\"on\">Sudan<\/st1:country-region> this weekend to urge the country to allow U.N. peacekeeping troops to enter the war-torn Darfur region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The governor is making the trip at the request of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.savedarfur.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Save Darfur Coalition<\/a>, which asked for <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s help last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">At least 400,000 people have been killed and another 2 million forced to flee their homes in the last three years in <st1:place st=\"on\">Darfur<\/st1:place> while Sudanese forces have fought two rebel groups. President Bush has recognized assaults on civilians of a particular ethnic group associated with the rebels as acts of genocide by the Sudanese government and its allied militias.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Sudanese government has allowed African Union troops to enter the region but refused U.N. peacekeeping troops despite a U.N. resolution calling for a force to intervene. The African Union troops have had little success.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">With that in mind, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> will meet with Sudanese officials Saturday to urge the acceptance of a joint peacekeeping force made up of troops from the United Nations and African Union forces, according to a news release from the governor\u2019s office. He will also push for a cease fire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThis is a crisis of incredible proportions. Millions of lives in the Darfur region are at risk from war, disease and malnutrition,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said in the release. \u201cThe <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> has an opportunity to use leadership and diplomacy to help, and if I can play even a small part in that effort, I am ready to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">While in <st1:country-region st=\"on\">Sudan<\/st1:country-region>, <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> will travel to the <st1:place st=\"on\">Darfur<\/st1:place> region to make a personal assessment and will meet with humanitarian groups.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> has coordinated his trip with Andrew Natsios, special envoy to <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Sudan<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> for the U.S. State Department, according to the release. The Save Darfur Coalition is paying for the trip.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In September, <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> traveled to <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Sudan<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> and secured the release of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Paul Salopek and two colleagues who were jailed on charges of espionage, passing information illegally and writing \u201cfalse news.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The governor has a long-term relationship with Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir and the country\u2019s ambassador to the <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">United States<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>. In 1996, when he was a congressman, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> successfully negotiated the release of a U.S. Air Force pilot and two Red Cross workers who were being held hostage. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gov.
