Bill Richardson has been asked to travel to <st1:country-region st=\"on\">Sudan<\/st1:country-region> to help push the government to allow peacekeeping forces in the devastated <st1:place st=\"on\">Darfur<\/st1:place> region, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kvia.com\/Global\/story.asp?S=5829060\" target=\"_blank\">Associated Press<\/a> is reporting.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Washington, D.C.-based <a href=\"http:\/\/www.savedarfur.org\/content\" target=\"_blank\">Save Darfur Coalition<\/a> made the request, and <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is consulting with the State Department, the Sudanese Government and the United Nations, spokesman Pahl Shipley told the news service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The United Nations passed a resolution in September that approved sending 22,000 peacekeeping troops to <st1:place st=\"on\">Darfur<\/st1:place>, but the Sudanese government has refused to allow them in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The invitation could continue to give <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> national press and boost his image as a foreign-policy expert at a time when he\u2019s considering a run for president. He met last week, for the second time since he was elected governor, with North Korean officials in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Santa Fe<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> to discuss that ongoing conflict.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> may be the ideal diplomat to negotiate with the Sudanese government. In September, he successfully negotiated the release of American journalist Paul Salopek and two others who were being held on charges of espionage. They were attempting to report on the conflict in <st1:place st=\"on\">Darfur<\/st1:place> for National Geographic magazine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is liked by some high-ranking Sudanese officials. He has been friends with <st1:country-region st=\"on\">Sudan<\/st1:country-region>\u2019s ambassador to the <st1:country-region st=\"on\">United States<\/st1:country-region> since 1996, when <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> negotiated the release of Red Cross workers, an American pilot and others who were being held by Sudanese rebels. The current ambassador, Khadir Haroun Ahmed, was <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s translator for that trip. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gov.
