Nathan Small will replace Steve Trowbridge as the District 4 representative on the Las Cruces City Council. My final count in District 4 has Small with 600 votes, Steve Montaño with 489 and Isaac Chavez with 335. That gives Small 42 percent of the vote, so he avoids a runoff. “That’s what it’s looking like,” Small said. Dolores Connor will serve another term as the District 2 representative on the Las Cruces City Council. She was re-elected with 831 votes, or 52 percent, to Vince Boudreau’s 777 votes, or 48 percent. Connor confirmed that she was declaring victory, but refused to comment further. Continue Reading
Miguel Silva isn’t declaring victory, but my tally has him defeating 12-year incumbent José Frietze in the Las Cruces City Council District 1 race. My count has Silva with 625 votes, Frietze with 504 votes, Ron Gurley with 144 votes and Conrado Guerra with 116 votes. That gives Silva 45 percent, with all votes accounted for. With only one polling place to count each in districts 1 and 4, Miguel Silva has secured 520 votes – or 45 percent – in the District 1 race, and Nathan Small has secured 486 votes – or 42 percent – in the District 4 race. In races with more than two candidates, a candidate has to win 40 percent of the vote to avoid a runoff against the second-place candidate. It’s possible both will do that, and it’s looking likely at this point that 12-year District 1 Councilor José Frietze, who is 92 votes behind Silva, is going to lose. Continue Reading

Early numbers reveal some tight contests, particularly in the mayoral and presiding municipal judge races. Results from two polling places – Las Cruces High School in District 2 and Booker T. Washington Elementary School in District 1 – have incumbent Bill Mattiace beating challenger Ken Miyagishima by 20 votes, 255 to 235. In the municipal judge race, incumbent Melissa Miller-Byrnes is beating challenger Conrad F. Perea by one vote, 244 to 243. In the council District 2 race, incumbent Dolores Connor is losing to challenger Vince Boudreau by 11 votes, 137 to 126. And in the District 1 race, incumbent José Frietze has 94 votes, while challenger Miguel Silva has 72, challenger Conrado Guerra has 45 and challenger Ron Gurley has 17. Continue Reading
