Duran issues a snarky report we can’t trust

By Heath Haussamen, NMPolitics.net | November 28, 2011

We needed Secretary of State Dianna Duran to lead a transparent probe of the voter rolls that included county clerks from both parties so we could know there was evidence to back up the conclusions and that partisanship wasn’t an issue. We didn’t need a snarky report we can’t trust. Continue Reading

Welcome to a new era of democracy

By Heath Haussamen, NMPolitics.net | November 16, 2011

The Internet makes democracy possible in a way the world has never before seen. The challenge for movements like the Tea Party and Occupy is to rise above division and work together to change the world. Continue Reading

Degrading gay people isn’t acceptable, Judge Murphy

By Heath Haussamen, NMPolitics.net | November 7, 2011

District Judge Mike Murphy degraded gay people in conversations with a court employee and another judge who are both gay. He also created a hostile work environment. Treating people that way isn’t acceptable. Murphy needs to apologize. Continue Reading

King’s red-herring allegation won’t silence me

By Heath Haussamen, NMPolitics.net | November 2, 2011

Attorney General Gary King attempted to damage my credibility and intimidate me into silence last week by suggesting that I colluded with Republicans to deflect criticism away from the governor and onto him. I don’t collude with politicians, and I won’t be silenced. Continue Reading

A real debate!

By Heath Haussamen, NMPolitics.net | October 26, 2011

True debates – as opposed to bland forums – are rare in politics these days, so it was refreshing to see the Las Cruces mayoral candidates engage in a real live debate on Tuesday. Continue Reading

An apology to Judge Murphy

By Heath Haussamen, NMPolitics.net | October 21, 2011

In the course of writing about the bribery case against District Judge Mike Murphy over the last few days, I discovered that I’ve been making a whopper of an error in my reporting. For that, I owe Judge Murphy an apology. Continue Reading

Progress in my efforts to obtain vote-probe records

By Heath Haussamen, NMPolitics.net | October 14, 2011

I’m pleased to report progress in my ongoing efforts to obtain records related to the secretary of state’s claim that she has evidence of foreign nationals illegally voting in New Mexico elections. But I still don’t have all the records I need to analyze her claim. Continue Reading

AG thumbs his nose at contribution limits

By Heath Haussamen, NMPolitics.net | October 12, 2011

Attorney General Gary King’s latest outrageous action is accepting a campaign contribution of $15,000 less than a year after a law limiting donations to $5,000 – a law he supported – took effect. Continue Reading

Sunland Park mayor still doesn’t get it

By Heath Haussamen, NMPolitics.net | October 10, 2011

Sunland Park Mayor Martin Resendiz says now isn’t the “proper time” for him to run for Congress because of the “bad publicity” he and the city have received. But the issue isn’t the publicity; it’s the ethical problems that plague him and the city he runs. Continue Reading

It’s time for Sunland Park to grow up

By Heath Haussamen, NMPolitics.net | October 4, 2011

Sunland Park’s government is volatile. Its word isn’t worth a penny. There’s reason to suspect widespread corruption. In short, the government is standing in the way of the bettering of people’s lives in Southern Doña Ana County. That needs to stop. Continue Reading

Block’s plea bargain isn’t much of a deterrent

By Heath Haussamen, NMPolitics.net | September 30, 2011

By giving Public Regulation Commissioner Jerome Block Jr. a chance to avoid prison and felony convictions on his record, Attorney General Gary King is doing little to discourage other elected officials from engaging in criminal behavior. Continue Reading

The media shouldn’t decide who gets to be president

By Heath Haussamen, NMPolitics.net | September 28, 2011

Though he has a strong résumé, ideas about how to fix America, and a penchant for being brutally honest, Gary Johnson’s presidential campaign is dead simply because the mainstream media decided he couldn’t win. That’s outrageous. Continue Reading

Let’s get on with the redistricting court battle

By Heath Haussamen, NMPolitics.net | September 22, 2011

Redistricting was destined to end up in court, so maybe the Legislature should adjourn sine die today and stop spending taxpayer money to try to complete this futile exercise. We’re already going to spend millions in legal fees. Let’s get on with it. Continue Reading

Agency’s excuse for withholding records is bogus

By Heath Haussamen, NMPolitics.net | September 20, 2011

Tax and Revenue refused in May to release documents related to the secretary of state’s claim about foreign nationals illegally voting, saying they were part of a police probe. We now know that police aren’t investigating, so that isn’t a valid reason to withhold records. Continue Reading

We need to pay our legislators

By Heath Haussamen, NMPolitics.net | September 16, 2011

The raging battle in Santa Fe about whether lawmakers are working hard enough points to a deeper issue. Our unpaid legislators can’t keep up with the governor or the pace of life in the 21st Century no matter how hard they work. We need to pay these folks. Continue Reading
