Misquez won’t apply for magistrate position

Ralph Misquez says he won’t apply to be Doña Ana County’s next magistrate judge.

Several people have encouraged him to apply, but Democrat Misquez said he won’t. He is still recovering from a four-year campaign for sheriff that ended with a defeat in last week’s election.

“It took a toll,” Misquez said. “I’m not ready.”

Misquez didn’t discount the possibility of applying for a magistrate position in the future. He said he and Democrat Joel Cano, who would have been his undersheriff if he had been elected, discussed the magistrate job after the New Mexico Supreme Court removed Carlos Garza from it last week.

Cano called to ask Misquez if he was going to apply, and when he found out Misquez would not, said he was going to apply. Misquez said he gave Cano his blessing.

Meanwhile, the governor’s office announced today that it’s seeking applicants for the position.

Interested candidates must send applications, signed background check forms, résumés and letters of recommendation to Governor Bill Richardson, Attention Legal Division, State Capitol Building, Suite 400, Santa Fe, NM 87501.
