Voter turnout in the county tops 40 percent

More than 39,000 registered voters in Doña Ana County voted in the Nov. 7 general election.

The exact number – 39,077 – is 40.6 percent of the 96,246 who were registered to vote for the election. That’s lower than the statewide turnout, but pretty good for this community.

There were almost 26,000 votes cast on Election Day. Just over 9,000 were cast early, and just over 3,000 were absentee ballots. There were 714 provisional ballots cast, and 656 were accepted.

The number of Democrats who voted early was 4,892 and who voted absentee was 2,679. The number of Republicans who voted early was 3,382 and who voted absentee was 1,119.

The party breakdown of Election Day and provisional votes isn’t yet available.

Of the total number of registered voters in the county, 47,782, or 49.6 percent, are Democrats; 28,803, or 29.9 percent, are Republicans; and 19,661, or 20.4 percent, are registered as minor party members or independents.

The county commission is set to certify the election results later today. I’ll report on final numbers from the races this afternoon.
