Voter registration skyrockets in Doña Ana County

The number of registered voters in Doña Ana County has increased by more than 27,000 since 2004, the county’s Bureau of Elections is reporting.

The county released statistics today on the number of people eligible to vote in the upcoming Nov. 4 election. The number of new registered voters since 2004 — 27,307 — accounts for more than 25 percent of the total number of people registered to vote in the county.

The biggest gain has been among independents and people who declined to state a party affiliation. That group went from accounting for 15 percent of registered voters in the county in 2004 to currently being almost 22 percent of the total number of registered voters.

Democrats now make up 49 percent of the county’s registered voters, and Republicans account for 28 percent. People registered in other political parties make up less than 1 percent.

One other number for context: The Census estimates that, in 2007, the county had a population of 198,791. However, the City of Las Cruces says the Census is undercounting the population of the city by several thousand people. If the city’s right, the population of the county would be several thousand above the 200,000 mark.
