McCamley challenges Teague to four debates

Second Congressional District Democratic candidate Bill McCamley challenged his primary opponent this weekend to square off with him in four debates to be held during the month of May.

McCamley made the challenge to Harry Teague in a letter he handed him at a forum both attended on Saturday in Silver City.

“If democracy is really about representing the people, then we owe the voters the chance to talk with us together in an in-depth format about their issues and concerns,” McCamley wrote in the letter. “Today’s forum is a good start. However, we can do more. Let’s show the people of the district that we value their perspective and respect their judgment.”

McCamley proposed that the two participate in four one-on-one forums in May, one each week, throughout the 2nd District.

I have not been able to reach the Teague campaign for comment. McCamley said the Teague campaign has not responded to the request. In the letter, he asked that Teague have his staff get in touch with McCamley’s to set up the forums.

Teague and McCamley have participated in several candidate forums, with most of them held before the other Democratic candidates dropped out of the 2nd District race. Click here to read my analysis of the most recent forum I covered.

Update, 3:45 p.m.

Teague, in a statement released by his campaign, said there is at least one upcoming forum both will attend in Roswell, and there may be others.

“I believe it is important to show the people of the district that we value their perspective and respect their judgment. That’s why I am making my case directly to the people. That’s why I have put tens of thousands of miles on my pickup truck, driving across the district, talking to voters. That’s why I have hosted dozens of community meetings, so voters get a chance to ask questions and have a real discussion about the issues,” Teague said. “We have participated in several forums, but now it is time that we take our message out of meeting rooms and directly to the people.”

The Roswell forum will be held on May 5 and will be televised there on Cable Channel 11, Teague said.

As I’ve disclosed in the past, I’m friends with McCamley. Click here to read about that.
