At least four Las Crucens considering District 6 race

I reported last week that Las Crucen Lawrence Joy was seriously considering running for the District 6 seat on the Las Cruces City Council that is being vacated by Ken Miyagishima, who was elected mayor last week.

The Las Cruces Sun-News has added four more names to the list of potential candidates. They are:

• Pat Curran, a former county magistrate judge.

• Sherry Thomas, head of the Quality Growth Alliance.

• Edward Fernandez, a former Las Cruces Public Schools administrator.

The city clerk plans to hold the special election sometime in January, and will set final dates for the election and candidate filing later this week. The election is also dependent on the likelihood that Miyagishima’s mayoral victory survives a coming challenge by outgoing Mayor Bill Mattiace.

Update, 1:20 p.m.

Karen R. Trujillo, a real-estate broker who is also president of the Hispano Chamber of Commerce de Las Cruces, confirmed that she’s also seriously considering running for the District 6 seat on the city council.

“I am considering it and looking at all options and strategic planning for such a short race,” she said.
