‘Questionable transactions’ lead to audit of Corrections Department

Hector Balderas

State Auditor Hector Balderas is conducting a special audit of the New Mexico Corrections Department after a tip led to discovery of “potential abuse of the procurement process by certain vendors who were awarded large government contracts.”

That’s according to a news release Balderas’ office sent out today.

“After analyzing information on this case over recent months, I have determined that taxpayer dollars are at risk and an immediate special audit is warranted,” Balderas said. “Unlawful profiteering on the backs of New Mexico’s taxpayers will not be tolerated.”

The release said the “potential waste and abuse” happened between 2007 and 2010 but didn’t name specific vendors or contracts. The auditor’s office isn’t releasing a timeline for completion of the audit, but it has designated a team to conduct the audit.
