Heinrich wins 1st Congressional District race

Jon Barela, left, and Martin Heinrich

Freshman U.S. Rep. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., has fought off a strong challenge from Republican Jon Barela to be re-elected.

With 94 percent of precincts reporting, Heinrich leads 52-48 percent, but the race has been called.

Heinrich won largely because of a strong get-out-the-vote effort by Democrats. Albuquerque, which makes up most of the district, is home to most of the people who voted in 2008 for the first time because they were inspired by Barack Obama.
