Grisham says she hasn’t picked an office to seek

Michelle Lujan Grisham said she doesn’t yet know what office she’ll try to win, but says we’ll know in the next six to eight weeks.

The governor announced today that the health secretary is leaving her job to run for office.

“What do you think I should run for? Is there an office in Las Cruces that I should add to the list?” she asked when I asked what office she would seek.

Grisham said she is “absolutely” considering running against U.S. Rep. Heather Wilson, R-N.M. next year, or for Albuquerque mayor in 2009. Mayor Marty Chávez is considering running for governor in 2010 and hasn’t yet announced if he’ll seek re-election in 2009.

She said she hasn’t thought much about running against U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., or for the Albuquerque City Council next year, but would if others think she should. She’s open to other races, too.

“I’m meeting with folks to determine which office,” she said. “I’ve got my eyes set on 2008, but 2010 isn’t out of the question.”

Grisham has come under fire recently. Several top employees of the department have left over concerns about her management style. But she said she is choosing to leave the department only because she wants to seek elected office.

“Nothing like that is forcing me out,” she said.

Grisham has wanted to run for office for years, she said, and became “worried that if I don’t do this now that I’m never going to do it.”

A run against Chávez, a fellow Democrat and popular mayor, would be controversial. If she opted to take on Wilson, she’d have a primary against Democrat and current Albuquerque City Councilor Martin Heinrich.

A prior version of this posting incorrectly stated that the Albuquerque mayor’s seat is up for grabs next year.
