Nelly Garcia, a document technician in the Doña Ana County Clerk’s Office, answers a student’s question about registering to vote in Carl Bailey’s classroom at Chaparral High School in April. Behind Garcia, County Clerk Scott Krahling speaks to students about registering to vote.

NMPolitics.net editor and publisher Heath Haussamen was on the radio this week discussing his recent article on nonpartisan efforts to increase voting and civic engagement in Doña Ana County.

You can listen to the 50-minute interview on Here & There with Dave Marash, which is produced by KSFR-FM in Santa Fe, here:

Haussamen’s article examined an ambitious effort led by Doña Ana County Clerk Scott Krahling to address the perennial problem of low voter turnout, largely through engaging young people and aiming to build a stronger culture of voting in the county over a generation.

The article was well-received. In addition to the radio interview with Marash, The Santa Fe New Mexican’s editorial board weighed in, writing in an op-ed that other county clerks should follow Krahling’s lead and undertake similar initiatives.
