Trump, a Republican, said Democrat Hillary Clinton had called him to concede the race.

Earlier in the night Clinton was declared the winner in New Mexico. At 1 a.m. Wednesday she was ahead in the state by more than 8 percentage points.

But also at 1 a.m. The New York Times had Trump leading nationwide with 279 electoral votes — over the threshold of 270 for victory — to Clinton’s 218.

The newspaper predicted that Clinton would win the popular vote nationwide.
