Former U.S. President Bill Clinton is visiting New Mexico later this month to campaign for his wife, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Hillary Clinton and her primary opponent, Bernie Sanders, are both opening offices in New Mexico.

Whether Hillary Clinton or Sanders will visit New Mexico to campaign before the state’s June 7 primary remains to be seen.
Bill Clinton will hold campaign events in Albuquerque and Española on May 24 and 25, the Clinton campaign announced Thursday. Details haven’t yet been released.
Meanwhile, Sanders will open his first New Mexico office in Albuquerque on Monday, his campaign announced Sunday. The campaign will hold a news conference at 7:30 p.m. on Monday to discuss Sanders “platform of raising the minimum wage, fighting for social justice and correcting a corrupt campaign finance system held up by a rigged economy and bring it to their communities through phone banking and canvassing,” according to a news release.
Clinton’s campaign already opened an office in Albuquerque. The campaign will open an office in Las Cruces with an event at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. At that event, Las Cruces Mayor Ken Miyagishima, state Sen. Joseph Cervantes, state Rep. Bill McCamley, and Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Joni Gutierrez will “discuss why Hillary Clinton is the only candidate who can break down the barriers that are holding Americans back and build ladders of opportunity and empowerment in their place,” a news release states.
Victor Reyes, spokesman for Clinton’s campaign in New Mexico, said the campaign “will be announcing more office openings in other parts of the state a little later this coming week.”
Grassroots groups have been working to elect Sanders in Las Cruces and other areas of the state for months.
There’s been little scientific polling done of New Mexico’s Democratic primary. Clinton was ahead in an Albuquerque Journal poll in February. Sanders easily won NMPolitics.net’s recent, completely unscientific New Mexico straw poll.
