More than half of the 17,300 visitors to NMPolitics.net’s website in July came from Facebook.
That statistic, along with the fantastic discussions we’ve been having – some of which I’ve turned into news articles – are a strong indication that our efforts to do journalism that informs and engages people are working.
You all are engaging, and our discussions have been respectful and productive. I often say NMPolitics.net is aiming to facilitate bridge-building conversations.
Thus far, I believe together we’re succeeding.
In June NMPolitics.net had about 11,000 unique visitors, so the site experienced a significant increase – more than 6,000 additional visitors – in July.
The most-read article in July was a commentary by a Hobbs resident about that city manager’s contract. It had almost 4,300 page views, which tells me there’s a real hunger for watchdogging of local government there.
A commentary about an open-records violation committed by the N.M. Public Education Department was also well-read. So were opinion pieces I wrote about the Spanish conquistador Don Juan de Oñate and Gov. Susana Martinez’s spin machine.
I want you to know I’m encouraged by the thoughtful discussions we’ve been having. It’s not perfect. It’s been a little messy at times. But for the most part it’s been, for me, a breath of fresh air. Too often the Internet conversation about our society is nasty, hateful and divisive.
I want to thank you for contributing to our bridge-building community.
I’m still working to fund NMPolitics.net at a level that will keep it sustainable. Please donate today! Any amount helps! No contribution is too small!
You can also learn more about becoming an advertising sponsor.
Regardless of whether you’re able to help fund the site, please keep reading and joining our conversations about politics, policy and the general direction of our society.
I’m honored that so many of you engaged with NMPolitics.net in July. Let’s keep the conversation going!
