Cliff Pirtle has defeated Chad Hamill in the GOP primary and won the right to take on Senate President Pro Tem Tim Jennings in November, Capitol Report New Mexico is reporting.
From the article:
“The county clerks in Otero, Chaves and Eddy counties are putting together the paperwork on their respective recounts and sending them off to the Secretary of State’s Office and on July 9, Secretary of State Dianna Duran and the State Canvassing Board will certify the results.
“Capitol Report New Mexico called the three county clerks, who told us that there were no changes in the vote totals in Chaves and Otero counties while the recount in Eddy County showed ‘a one vote difference for Pirtle,’ Eddy County Clerk Darlene Rosprim said.
“By our account, that means the 26-year-old Pirtle defeated Hamill, the fire chief of Roswell, by a final count of 1,019-1,009.”
That leaves one race still up in the air. In June, Maxine Velasquez finished Election Day with a lead of three votes over Clemente Sanchez in the state Senate District 30 Democratic primary race, 1,221 to 1,218, but a recount is still underway. The winner will unseat incumbent Democrat David Ulibarri and take on Republican Vickie Perea in November.
