Lt. Gov.’s claim about voting in 1980 raises eyebrows

Lt. Gov. John Sanchez talked at Saturday’s Republican Party preprimary nominating convention about the pride he felt when he voted for Ronald Reagan in the 1980 presidential election.

But there’s a problem with that claim. From Milan Simonich, a reporter who covers the Roundhouse for several N.M. newspapers:

“The curious part is that every record we have checked shows that Sanchez was born on Jan. 11, 1963. Therefore, he would not have reached the legal voting age of 18 until 1981 – two months after Reagan’s election.”

Is Sanchez older than his stated age of 49? Or was he making up a story to inspire the audience? Simonich suggests there might be a third option, albeit one that would “stretch the imagination of even a conspiracy theorist:” that Sanchez “voted for Reagan illegally.”

Hmm…
