There are municipal elections in a number of New Mexico communities on March 6, including four of five incorporated cities in Doña Ana County.
The cities of Sunland Park and Anthony, the Town of Mesilla, and the Village of Hatch will all hold election contests on that day. Other cities around the state holding elections include Santa Fe and Clovis.
The Las Cruces Sun-News has the goods on who’s running in the Doña Ana County races. The most high-profile include:
- The race for mayor of Sunland Park. The city will have a new leader, as the embattled Martin Resendiz isn’t running again.
- The second mayoral contest in Anthony’s history.
- The open race for two seats on the Mesilla Board of Trustees, which features two familiar faces – former Mesilla Mayor Michael Cadena, who faced scandal during his tenure, and former Doña Ana County Clerk Ruben Ceballos, who in 2003 was convicted of felony violations of the state’s elections code and left office.

Update, 5 p.m.
Aren’t convicted felons barred from seeking elected office in New Mexico? I asked that question, given Ceballos’ candidacy, of Secretary of State Chief of Staff Ken Ortiz. Here’s what he said:
“According to nmcourts.com, it appears that Mr. Ceballos received a conditional discharge on March 11, 2004. Part of his sentence was that he could not run for office for 18 months.”
