In the middle of an election battle, Las Cruces Mayor Ken Miyagishima will be honored at the White House today as a “champion of change.”
The mayor will be recognized for “his work strengthening the local economy and creating jobs” along the Southwest border, a news release from the city states.
It’s part of the White House Champions of Change initiative, which profiles Americans who are working to help their communities innovate, educate and build a better America, the news release states.
From the news release:
“Mayor Miyagishima is being recognized for his work with his counterparts from the US-Mexico Border Mayors’ Alliance to promote cross-border trade and economic development in the Southwest. He has also supported the efforts of the Las Cruces Hispano Chamber of Commerce and other business leaders to foster a vibrant local economy and the creation of jobs in the area.”
Miyagishima will meet with White House officials to discuss his work and identify ways the federal government might be able to help.
Miyagishima is up for re-election on Nov. 8. Though filing day hasn’t yet arrived, three others have announced that they’re running for mayor – District 2 Councilor Dolores Connor, Michael Ray Huerta and Michael Fleming.
