Nathan Small has announced that he is seeking re-election to the District 4 seat on the Las Cruces City Council.
“We have made real progress in Las Cruces over the past four years, especially when it comes to quality of life in our existing neighborhoods,” Small said in a news release. “We’ve returned accountability and control to the people of Las Cruces.”
Small said fiscal responsibility has been key to the city’s progress, saying the city is “in excellent financial shape” in spite of “difficult economic times for our state and nation.”
“We maintain twice the required reserves in our general fund, and in the last two years have cut over $7 million from the city budget while keeping services strong,” he said. “With businesses opening or expanding along Picacho, El Paseo, and on the West Mesa, and street work going on across District 4, I am excited to continue our work of moving Las Cruces forward.”
Small said he was a leader in establishing a sustainability plan for the city – which he expects will save the city hundreds of thousands of dollars in energy costs in the coming years – and said communication with constituents, improved publish safety, and economic development have been his primary concerns.
Small has held dozens of neighborhood meetings during his first term on the council to establish neighborhood watch programs and hear from District 4 residents.
“It’s important to me to listen to the people of our district and to partner with them in setting priorities for the city,” he said. “Residents are playing an increasingly important role in making Las Cruces a great place to live – now and in the years to come.”
Small married Xochitl Torres of Las Cruces in 2010. He describes himself as “an avid outdoorsman.” He’s a member of the Breakfast Optimist Club and Doña Ana County Associated Sportsmen.
Two candidates have announced that they’re challenging Small in the Nov. 8 election – Aaron Henry Diaz and Ryan Matthew Dailey. Dailey, however, was arrested recently on drunken driving charges in Las Cruces and remains jailed because he’s also wanted in Virginia for failing to appear in court on a separate drunken driving charge from 2009.
Dailey has not said whether he plans to stay in the race.
