Councilor Thomas won’t seek another term

Las Cruces City Councilor Sharon Thomas says she won’t run for mayor this year and will give up her seat in 2013 rather than seeking another term.

Thomas, who represents District 6 on the council, made the announcement in a recent e-mail to constituents. Asked by NMPolitics.net about her decision to not seek another term, she said this:

“I turned 70 last year and will be 73 in 2013. That’s too old to keep up this pace. Also, my kids used to live in Las Cruces or, at least, in N.M. Now, the one who lived in Las Cruces has moved to Albuquerque and the one who lived in Santa Fe has moved to Livingston, Mt. I want to have time to spend with family, to travel, etc. Too difficult to do that with a meeting every week.”

Mayor Ken Miyagishima is seeking re-election later this year. District 2 Councilor Dolores Connor is running against him.
