Based on the expectation that U.S. Rep. Martin Heinrich is about to jump into the U.S. Senate race, state Sen. Eric Griego announced today that he’s forming an exploratory committee as he considers running to replace Heinrich in Congress.
The Albuquerque Journal has reported that Heinrich could announce his intentions this weekend. Heinrich, a Democrat, would immediately be a heavy hitter in the race to replace Jeff Bingaman in the U.S. Senate.
Based on that information, Griego, a Democrat from Albuquerque, released this statement today:
“New Mexico State Senator Eric Griego today announced that he will form an exploratory committee to consider a run for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Congress in the First Congressional District. Media reports suggest current First Congressional District Representative Martin Heinrich will be announcing tomorrow he will seek the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate.”
“It is a very critical time for our state and our country,” Griego said. “We need a Democratic Congressional candidate who will unapologetically stand up for working families and take on those who would put large corporate interests ahead of our children, our environment and our local businesses.”
Griego, a former Albuquerque city councilor, said he needs to discuss his final decision with his family, employer and supporters, but he is “seriously considering entering the congressional race.”
