Members of the Democratic Party of New Mexico’s State Central Committee narrowly voted today to give Javier Gonzales another two-year term as their chairman.
Gonzales won with 191 votes to Sam Bregman’s 180 and Letitia Montoya’s nine.
“Today Democrats emerged united and ready for victory in 2012,” Gonzales said in a news release. “Our mission is clear: Secure re-election for President Obama, elect a Democrat to succeed Jeff Bingaman and continue to hold Governor Martinez’s feet to the fire over her divisive agenda.”
“New Mexicans want leaders focused on creating jobs and investing in education – and they’re not getting that from Martinez and the GOP,” Gonzales said.
Gonzales, 44 and a regent at New Mexico State University, has served as party chairman since 2009 and led the party during last year’s shellacking. That’s what prompted Bregman to challenge him.
The State Central Committee has 409 members from around New Mexico.
