After losing the chairmanship of the House Agriculture and Water Resources Committee on Thursday, Rep. Andy Nunez says he might leave the Democratic Party.
Nuñez headed to his home in Hatch on Thursday after House Speaker Ben Luján announced new committee assignments. Nunnez told NMPolitics.net that he’s going to “let it cool down for a week, and we’ll see what happens.”
But he confirmed he is thinking about switching his party registration to declined to state.
Nuñez was quoted by the Las Cruces Sun-News as saying he would “never become a Republican.”
In addition to stripping Nuñez of his chairmanship and removing him from the agriculture committee, Luján also removed Nuñez from the Energy Committee, instead assigning him to be a member of the Education and Transportation committees.
Nuñez has said he views the changes as retaliation. He was the most vocal Democrat who backed the unsuccessful, bipartisan effort earlier this week to replace Luján with Rep. Joseph Cervantes, D-Las Cruces.
Luján has not returned a call seeking comment on the committee changes.
