Even in the wake of Saturday’s shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, members of the New Mexico delegation say they don’t want to build a wall of security between themselves and their constituents.
That’s according to the Albuquerque Journal.
“I don’t think it’s practical to provide security to individual members,” Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., was quoted by the Journal as saying. “It’s also contrary to the general idea that members of Congress need to be freely available to constituents.”
“A representative democracy like we have can only work when you are out among the people,” U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce, R-N.M., was quoted as saying. “…We still want to be accessible.”
