Gov. Susana Martinez has nominated Dr. Catherine Torres of Las Cruces to be her administration’s health secretary.
Torres is a practicing pediatrician with Rio Grande Medical Group in Las Cruces. She has served on both the U.S.-Mexico Border Health Commission and the New Mexico-Sonora Commission.
“I am encouraged that the Health Department will be headed by a practicing physician with an impressive record of public service,” Martinez said in a news release. “As a pediatrician, Dr. Torres knows first-hand the health needs of New Mexico’s children and families. Her input will be extremely valuable as I work to develop effective and practical public health policies.”
Torres has also served on the Medical Advisory Committee of the Doña Ana County Detention Center and chaired the New Mexico Border Health Advisory Committee. She earned her bachelors and medical degrees from the University of New Mexico.
“It is a privilege to be asked to serve as the governor’s health secretary,” Torres said. “I look forward to applying the real-world experience I have gained working with New Mexico children and families to the administration of the Department of Health and the development of public policy in order to keep the people of our state healthy.”
