District Judge Stephen Bridgforth became today the second judge in the Third Judicial District Court to announce that he’s retiring effective January 1.

Last month, the Las Cruces court’s presiding judge, Jerald A. Valentine, announced that he’s retiring on the first day of 2011.

Both vacancies will be filled by Gov.-elect Susana Martinez, based on recommendations from a judicial nominating commission. The commission was already in place to nominate candidates to replace Valentine, but now it will consider candidates to replace both judges, according to a news release.

The commission meets Jan. 13 in Las Cruces. Applications are due by Jan. 3 at 5 p.m. You can obtain an application here.
