Republicans to pick Yates’ replacement on Saturday

Republicans will decide Saturday who will replace Harvey Yates Jr. as chairman of the state GOP.

Yates, who has led the Republican Party of New Mexico for the past two years, isn’t seeking another term. Nina Martinez, the state party’s first vice chair, and Monty Newman, a former Hobbs mayor, are both running for the position of state party chair.

Martinez had no immediate comment, but said she would call NMPolitics.net back shortly. Newman could not immediately be reached for comment.

The meeting of the party’s central committee will be held Saturday at Hotel Albuquerque at Old Town beginning at 10 a.m.

Newman, in addition to being a former Hobbs mayor, ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 2008. He’s also a past vice president of the National Association of Realtors. Martinez was the state party’s secretary before becoming first vice chair in 2008.
