Republican gubernatorial candidate Susana Martinez made a brief stop today at the Doña Ana County Republican Party headquarters to thank those in her hometown who have worked to help her campaign.
Martinez, who has been leading Democrat Diane Denish in the polls, sounded quite optimistic as she spoke to volunteers who were manning the phones in a final get-out-the-vote effort.
“This is one race we can win,” said Martinez, Doña Ana County’s district attorney. “…Someone from Las Cruces – who would have thought?”
I visited the county clerk’s office in Las Cruces and was told things continue to run smoothly. I drove by several polling places around lunchtime and saw people voting, but not long lines of people.
Supporters of local Democratic candidates were out in force at many polling places. I saw people holding up signs for state Reps. Jeff Steinborn and Nate Cote, Sheriff candidate J.R. Stewart and Assessor candidate Andy Segovia.
At the polling places I visited, I didn’t see anyone holding up signs for Republican candidates.
