Perea was appointed Tuesday by Gov. Bill Richardson, according to the Las Cruces Sun-News. Perea replaces Joseph Guillory, an embattled judge who was disciplined by the Supreme Court in January and resigned in August rather than defend himself from new allegations being brought forth.
Perea was a magistrate judge from 1999-2000 and has filled in for other judges more recently.
“Conrad Perea has a vast experience with the magistrate court, including hundreds of hours volunteering and training court clerks,” the Sun-News quoted Richardson as saying. “His experience will serve him well as he takes on this responsibility in this busy court.”
