Republican State Auditor candidate Errol Chavez missed a required campaign finance reporting deadline on Monday. According to his opponent, it’s the third time Chavez has missed such a deadline during the campaign.
As of the publication of this article, Chavez still hasn’t filed his report. He said Tuesday that he hadn’t had time to meet the state mandated deadline for filling his finance report because of “Doctors appointments and catchin up on my domestic responsibilities in las Cruces.”
Today, Chavez wrote in an e-mail that the report should be filed this afternoon.
“I was with my attorney all afternoon yesterday then at a forum in Alamogordo last night,” he wrote in the e-mail. “This morning I was giving a deposition for my divorce. I should complete the report by this afternoon.”
Chavez’s Democratic opponent, incumbent Hector Balderas, said Chavez’s missing of filing deadlines is “unacceptable.”
“Compliance is the cornerstone of maintaining integrity and confidence in our financial oversight system, and New Mexicans expect their elected officials to follow the law,” Balderas said in a prepared statement. “I take my responsibility seriously, including filing timely campaign finance reports.”
NMPolitics.net documented Chavez missing the filing deadline in July. Balderas said Chavez has missed three filing deadlines during the campaign.
Chavez’s e-mail didn’t address a question asking why he’s missed the previous filing deadlines.
