Because, apparently, that’s the only way Alamogordo resident John Kloepper gets paid for producing the energy.
U.S. Rep. Harry Teague, D-N.M., toured Kloepper’s solar project on Monday and learned about the issue, the Alamogordo Daily News is reporting. In the article, Kloepper also talked about his frustration at the situation, which incentivizes his wasting of the energy he’s producing but not using.
“The thing that makes this really hard to stomach is because the power is being burned on site, and PNM is basically just sending me a check for the REC (renewable energy credit),” Kloepper was quoted by the newspaper as saying. “That money is coming from somewhere, and it’s coming from the rate payers in town.”
