Brother of ABQ councilor wants to run for House seat

Tim Lewis

Tim Lewis, the brother of Albuquerque City Councilor Dan Lewis, has announced his candidacy for the District 60 House seat currently held by Democrat Jack Thomas.

But it’s not yet certain that Lewis will be the GOP candidate for the Rio Rancho-area House seat. The state GOP still has to meet on Aug. 5 to formally nominate a candidate. No others have made public announcements that they plan to seek the GOP nomination for the seat.

The nomination is up for grabs because the previous Republican candidate, Tonia Harris, dropped out of the race last week.

“When it comes to improving lives, I’ve learned through the years that government can often do more harm than good, especially when the judgments of elected officials are guided by political expediency rather than simple common sense,” Lewis said in a news release announcing his candidacy. “I want to bring commonsense leadership to the Legislature and stop the short-sighted decision-making that’s impeding our prosperity and jeopardizing our children’s future. With the right leadership in Santa Fe, we can turn things around.”

Lewis is a high school teacher. He and his wife have four boys.

In the NMPolitics.net monthly newsletter that goes to qualifying donors, I have listed Thomas at No. 4 on my list of most endangered incumbents in New Mexico this election cycle. I’m not yet sure how this changes things, and I’m going to wait to decide until the GOP formally nominates Lewis or someone else.
