PRC’s Jones unharmed in shooting

Sandy Jones

Public Regulation Commissioner Sandy Jones was shot at earlier today while he was parked on the side of Interstate 40 near Clines Corners talking on his cell phone.

Jones wasn’t harmed, but the window of his vehicle was shot out while he sat in it, according to Crissy Jones, his daughter and spokeswoman.

State police are investigating the incident, and no motive for the shooting or other information was immediately available.

Jones, a Democrat, is currently running for state land commissioner.

Update, 2:50 p.m.

In a news release, Jones said he is “a little shaken by the incident, but I was not hurt and that’s what’s important. I was just a few inches away from getting out of the land race.”

Jones said it was the back passenger window on his truck that was shot out. He saw a van passing by but did not get a good look at it.

Jones was on his way to Lovington for this evening’s Lea County Rural Cooperative meeting.

“I was talking on the phone and the next thing I knew there was a loud boom and the back window of my truck was completely gone,” he said in the release.
