Education Secretary Veronica Garcia says students “probably won’t notice a discernable difference” in their classrooms as a result of the approximately 1 percent cuts to education the governor signed into law today.
She added, in an interview with NMPolitics.net’s Peter St. Cyr, that smaller school districts “may notice it a little bit more.”
The Public Education Department itself will face a cut of about 3 percent, Garcia said. On top of that, its employees are among those who will have to take five furlough days.
