It appears that voters in Albuquerque have elected their first Republican mayor since 1985.
With 174 of 186 precincts reporting, Richard Berry has increased his lead. He has 32,900 votes, or 43.27 percent. Incumbent Martin Chávez has 26,749 votes, or 35.18 percent. Richard Romero was long ago out of the race and currently has 16,253 votes, or 21.37 percent.
Chávez didn’t concede the race, but he told supporters it “doesn’t look good for our side” and scheduled a Wednesday lunch with Berry, the New Mexico Independent is reporting.
Berry, meanwhile, was quoted by the Independent as saying, “The numbers are looking good right now.”
Assuming Berry holds on to win, he will take office on Dec. 10.
