Harry Teague is rich.
In fact, the Democrat, who represents southern New Mexico in the U.S. House, is the 10th richest member of Congress, according to rankings released today by the Washington, D.C. publication Roll Call.
Teague, an oilman from Hobbs, has a net worth of $40.63 million, according to the Roll call article.
The news organization compiled the rankings based on disclosure forms filed by members of the House and Senate. The wealthiest member is Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., who has a net worth of $167.55 million. Eight of the 10 richest members are Democrats.
There are 28 Democrats and 22 Republicans on the list of the 50 richest, and 11 are freshmen members. No others from New Mexico are in the top 50.
As a candidate last year, Teague listed his company, Teaco Energy Services, as having a value of between $5 million and $25 million. Such a range is all that’s required to be reported. But this year, on his congressional disclosure form, Teague went beyond what’s required and “helpfully” gave exact values for all his assets, the article states. He reported the oil company’s value as being $39,630,537.
Teague has been willing to use his personal wealth to get elected. He spent almost $1.5 million of his own money last year on the primary and general races.
